چکیده

The effect of oral and intravenous tolamolol on exercise tolerance was assessed in 11 patients with angina pectoris. Patients were selected on the basis of an absence of placebo response and the reliable reproducibility of anginal pain and electrocardiographic changes with exercise on a constant load Schonander-Elema bicycle ergometer. The effect of tolamolol on exercise time and heart rate was compared with that of propranolol. Tolamolol was shown to increase exercise tolerance and the effect was comparable to that of propranolol. Tolamolol did not produce a significant increase in airways resistance nor were any untoward side effects noted.

Effects of the cardioselective beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent metoprolol in angina pectoris. Subacute study with exercise tests.

The effect of a cardioselective beta-adrenergic blocking agent, metoprolol, on symptoms and exercise tolerance was studied in 16 patients with angina pectoris. Metroprolol was compared with placebo at two dose levels (20 mg t.d.s. and 50 mg t.d.s.) in a double-blind trial in 14 patients. Compared with placebo, metroprolol caused a significant reduction of heart rate and systolic blood pressure ...

Double-blind comparison of tolamolol, propranolol, practolol, and placebo in the treatment of angina pectoris.

Forty-two patients with angina pectoris have completed a randomized, double-blind trial comparing tolamolol 100 mg and 200 mg with propranolol 80 mg, practolol 100 mg, and placebo, all given three times a day. Tolamolol 200 mg thrice daily was found to be equivalent to propranolol 80 mg thrice daily in anti-anginal efficacy. Anginal attack rates and trinitrin consumption were significantly redu...

Clinical evaluation of practolol, a new cardioselective beta-blocking agent in angina pectoris.

In a controlled double-blind study practolol, a new cardioselective beta-blocking drug, was given to 15 patients with angina pectoris, and compared with propranolol 80 mg. q.d.s. The dose of practolol ranged from 200 to 600 mg.b.d. and was decided by initial open titration in individual patients. Though practolol did not influence the incidence of angina or glyceryl trinitrate consumption, it i...

Abrupt withdrawal of atenolol in patients with severe angina: comparison with the effects of treatment.

The effects of abrupt withdrawal of atenolol, a long acting cardioselective beta blocker, were studied in 20 patients with severe stable angina pectoris admitted to hospital for coronary arteriography. During the 144 hour postwithdrawal period no serious coronary events occurred. Mean and maximal daily heart rates rose steadily for at least 120 hours. No important arrhythmias were noted on ambu...

Abolition of exercise induced ST depression after exercise training and its recurrence after beta blockade.

Exercise training can improve angina. A patient whose exercise tolerance test became normal after a year on an exercise programme nevertheless had a positive exercise test when he was taking a beta blocker. These results suggest that it may be undesirable to use beta blockers in patients with angina who are on exercise programmes.
